The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor tells the ECU what the the intake airflow temperature is.  The IAT sensor is located on the "cap" that covers the throttle body.  It's basically a thermoresistor within a protective "cage".

Total failure of the IAT sensor will cause the ECU to fall into a fail-safe mode - the car will run very rich.  The car will run pretty well with a bad IAT sensor.

Possible effects:
  • Rich mixtures
  • Lower MPG
  • Sluggish throttle response
