The stock stereo headunit is not very good quality, and they all typically fail at this age.  We recommend that you replace all the components with aftermarket equivalents.  New aftermarket stereos have better electronics and technology.  Current prices for aftermarket stereos components are relative cheap for their performance, so there is no excuse to go this route.  If you do opt for an aftermarket stereo headunit, you will need to bypass the stock stereo amplifiers (they are junk anyways).  If you still have the original speakers, they will surely have crumbling foam speaker cone surrounds.  The original speakers are poor quality anyways, so upgrading them to aftermarket ones will surely give you better sound!  You might end up spending $300 to $400 to replace the headunit and all 4 speakers, but this should reward you with superior sound for the next several years!
