The gas filler door can be problematic sometimes and not open when you pull the remote release lever.  The remote release cable itself can sometimes be the problem, as they have been known to stretch or fail and snap.  Stretched or broken cable would require replacing the original cable.

Any problem spot with the gas filler door is the door area itself.  If the remote release is working correctly, bending the catch on the door itself will sometimes work.  There is an emergency release pull right behind the gas filler door itself, exposed when you pull the carpet panel.  The release pin mount itself can also get dirty and corroded; just undo the hex nut holding the pin into the rest of the car, and the whole assembly should slide out.  Clean all crud and rust away from the release pin and lubricate with grease.
