The center console is not a very sturdy piece.  The part is secured on the transmission hump by 4 screws:  two in front and two in back.  The body of the part is plastic, and not very sturdy plastic at that!  Leaning on the center console piece will usually reward you with a sickening crunch as the plastic cracks, so be very careful when putting any kinda of pressure on it!
