Noises such as screeching, scratching, whining, or crunching usually signals a failing bearing or
abnormal metal-to-metal contact. There are two major bearings that are easily heard outside
of the main transmission case when they do fail; they are the pilot bearing and the throw-out
release bearing. With some simple diagnostics, you can narrow down the bad bearing just by
pushing in the clutch pedal. If the sound gets louder as you push in the clutch pedal, it
is most likely the throw-out release bearing. If the sound gets louder with the clutch
pedal out, it's most likely the pilot bearing.
