If there are external
oil leaks from the turbo, it's most likely you'll need to replace a leaking
gasket.
The oil inlet pipe is connected to a compression fitting above
the turbo. This compression fitting rarely leaks, unless it is loose or
damaged from repeated removal. The oil inlet into the turbo is a flange
with a gasket. You can easily inspect this area on the top of the center
housing of the turbo. Any of these problems can be accessed and fixed with
the turbo in place.
The oil outlet pipe exits from the bottom of the
center housing of the turbo. There is a flex (stainless steel section)
pipe that goes into a flanged pipe which ends up on the lower front oil
cover. These sections typical leak due to bad gaskets. If the flex
section is coated with oil, it's the gasket on the center section of the turbo
that needs to be replaced. This job requires you to remove the turbo to
gain access to the gasket. If oil is leaking from the front flanged pipe,
this can be done without removal of the turbo.
